Mom: Can you come down [to San Jose]? I really need your help with something.

Me: What’s up? What do you need help with?

Mom: Just come home.

//drives back to San Jose from San Francisco

Me: Okay, I’m here. What’s up?

Mom: Okay, the ladder’s already outside. Can you clean the gutters? Thanks.

Me: WHAT?! THAT’S what you called me down for?

Mom: Well, if I asked you over the phone, you would have said ‘no’ and hung up.

Mom: Thanks. I’ll be inside the house watching tv. //grin
